Cabin Lake & Fleetview Trail

Connecting Fleetivew Drive to Transom Drive near Larry Uteck Boulevard, the Cabin Lake & Fleetview Trails are modest nature trails that offer an alternative to sidewalk strolls. Whether you live in the area or are passing through, this trail is ideal for an easy stroll or as part of your walking or jogging route.  At just over 1km, it may not be a workout due to its distance, but the moderate hills will get the heart pumping. Less than 1km from many different shops and restaurants, it’s an ideal place to grab a coffee and go for a stroll to get your daily dose of nature.

Though they may have different names, the Cabin Lake & Fleetview Trail are essentially the same trail. One 200m section connects to Fleetview Drive, and the other 1km section connects to Cabin Lake.  I wasn’t sure what qualifies something as a lake as opposed to a pond, but I assumed Cabin Lake has to be in a grey area in between, as it is only 200m in length and 50m in width.  After a little research, I found out that another key distinction, beyond size, is that lakes have a deep, dark “aphotic zone” where sunlight does not penetrate. Sunlight can reach the bottom of ponds, allowing plants to grow on the entire floor.

While it’s not the type of lake that you’d want to swim, ducks & waterfowl love it like they do ponds, making for a good birdwatching destination. Despite its small size, it’s still quite scenic, and there are a couple of different spots to stop and say hi to the ducks, one of which is a bench at the Eastern end of the lake.

Most access points have garbage cans and dog waste bag dispensers courtesy of the Halifax North West Trails Association, whose volunteers keep these dispensers stocked and oversee trail maintenance. You can support their work with a donation, become a member to help boost their numbers, and help out by being a trail monitor. If you’re interested in lending a hand in any capacity, reach out to them.

Cabin Lake Trip Tips

As this trail is ideal with a coffee in hand, it’s also conveniently located near many food & drink options (don’t make trail volunteers clean up your litter). Your standard Starbucks & Tim Hortons are nearby, but be sure to check out The Mellow Mug if you’re into local Cafe vibes. Boomburger offers a seasonal Cows Ice Cream kiosk (available indoors at Boomburger in the offseason), which makes for a great trail treat as well. If you want to enjoy some sit-down eats, there are lots of great options nearby. Check out the shopping Plazas on Southgate Drive and further up Larry Uteck Drive to find something that suits your taste.
