4) Click, Share, Subscribe, Like & Comment:

Clicking on ads. At a rate of pennies per click, it’s not much but it helps pay the bills of operating this site. With enough support via the other options mentioned above, I’d gladly get rid of the ads.

Share, comment, like and subscribe.  All forms of engagement on this site and social media act as both valuable feedback and a huge boost to algorithmic rankings.  These simple acts are very helpful to reach a broader audience.  More importantly, I’m motivated by knowing my work is appreciated!

Leave me some feedback.  I have encountered many friendly people on my hikes who were happy to see me at work and chat with me about the website.  “There’s the trails guy!” a mother exclaims to her children.  They me they’ve begun family hiking adventures at the direction of her young son who was inspired by something he saw on HalifaxTrails.ca.  Another encounter of a father and young son who tells me they’ve been using my website as a list of father-son excursions. Beaming with pride, these interactions are exactly what I hoped for when I created the site back in 2009.

Some emails occupy a special place in my inbox.  Among them, many people who tell me they’ve decided to visit or move to Nova Scotia thanks to what they’ve seen on HalifaxTrails.ca.  Others tell me I’ve helped them discover their new favourite activity, or gotten through tough times by discovering the grounding experiences in nature.  From groups and causes thanking me for a re-tweet to personal stories, feedback makes this whole project worthwhile. Kindness is free!

Thank You!

Despite the sizeable amount of traffic the site receives (50 000 page views per month) and the diverse audience it reaches (17 000 unique visitors per month), funding is a major struggle.  With no government grants or corporate backing, I’m able to be 100% independent at a cost (about me).

I don’t use a paywall or introduce other barriers, as this project was created to help everyone regardless of their ability to pay.  My work intends to provide equal opportunity access to the valuable tools and information I’ve made to help anyone explore our most beautiful places.  The core of this project is to empower everyone to discover and enjoy the physical and mental health benefits of outdoor activities.

My goal is to gain enough support to continue updating, improving, and expanding Halifax’s most popular online eco-tourism resource while keeping it free to all.  With your support, I’ll be able to devote more time and resources to this project.  What you see now has been done with minimal resources. I’d like to do to keep creating & improving content thanks to your support.

Thanks to all of you who “follow”, subscribe, “like”, share, re-tweet, and comment.  In addition to motivation, your interactions help to expand my reach!
