She proudly proclaims her title of "Halifax North West Trails Association's youngest trail monitor". I refer to her as my niece. Along with my mother, she's part of a team that's out to right humanity's wrongs, give back to nature, and help their community at the same time. ...But sometimes they are just out for a pleasant chat in a beautiful park. Along with many other volunteers with the Halifax Northwest Trails Association, they help monitor, maintain, and promote our priceless green spaces. Not many of us are aware of them or the work they do, even if we frequent the parks and trails they preside over. The importance of their work goes far beyond building, maintaining & monitoring trails. With the help of these volunteer organizations, a sense of #community is built, bonds strengthened, health & wellness improved. Take a minute to support your local volunteer trail organization to show your appreciation for the work they do 馃挌. Special thanks to the Halifax North West Trails Association. Belchers Marsh Park, a natural ecosystem, has experienced both human and natural disturbance. The surrounding residential development which occured in the 1990s has affected the water quality through run-off and the water level is higher than it was pre-development. Natural disturbance includes fire in the 1980s and hurricane Juan in September 2003, both of which impacted the woodlands.
