margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Hiking Preparation Tips For Beginners<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Throughout countless hours in the woods, I&#8217;ve learned a few basic principles for staying safe and comfortable.\u00a0 Each mistake is a lesson learned, and every outing comes with a new lesson.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve learned these lessons the hard way, but you don&#8217;t have to.\u00a0 Below are what I consider the most important hiking preparation advice.<\/p>\n<h3>1) Prioritize <b><i><u>Comfort<\/u><\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0This may seem like it should rank low in importance, especially if you fancy yourself a no-frills adventurer who can overcome obstacles with teeth-gritting. \u00a0Unfortunately, that little strap rubbing against your shoulder and that tiny pebble in your shoe are enough to bring down Paul Bunyan himself after a couple of hours. \u00a0Quadruple the degree of discomfort you feel when you start off on a hike and you&#8217;ll have an idea of what it&#8217;s going to feel like further down the trail. \u00a0When you stop for your first break you will be surprised how small discomforts have suddenly morphed into handicapping pain.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Before you begin, it&#8217;s a good idea to have everything adjusted. \u00a0Even if it means holding up your companions, spending time getting everything adjusted at the outset always pays off by not getting held up making repeated gear adjustments further down the trail. \u00a0Make sure your socks don&#8217;t have an annoying wrinkle in them, tighten up your laces and double knot them, perfectly adjust your backpack, and eliminate anything that may cause <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.halifaxtrails.ca\/product\/moleskin-blister-padding\/\">blisters<\/a> and chaffing.<\/p>\n<h3>2)\u00a0<b><i><u>Less Is More<\/u><\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Bringing that massive beach cooler seems like a great idea when you picture yourself living the good life at your destination.\u00a0 The mental and physical battle endured getting it there can quickly outweigh any benefits. \u00a0A heavy pack is never worth a twisted ankle.\u00a0 A twisted ankle can quickly turn into a survival situation when you&#8217;re far into the wilderness.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0When you pack for your excursion, always start with the most important items and work your way down (Water &gt;Food &gt;Warmth&gt;&#8230;Bottle of wine).\u00a0 Every ounce counts when it comes to hiking, so even the smallest item warrants careful consideration.\u00a0 Experienced hikers will often weigh their gear by the gram.\u00a0 It&#8217;s the reason that <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.halifaxtrails.ca\/product-tag\/ultralight\/\">&#8220;ultralight&#8221; gear<\/a> can be significantly more expensive than cheaper, heavier counterparts.\u00a0\u00a0 Pack your heaviest items low in your pack to ease pressure on your shoulders and always have water easily accessible.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Gear\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/videoseries?list=PLsIXMc3B__c3nXX8-4WCdjyuhBRVq20zr\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; YouTube <a href=\"https:\/\/multimedia.halifaxtrails.ca\/videos\/gear-videos-reviews\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">playlist<\/a>.\u00a0 (Click the upper-right corner of the video to reveal the entire playlist.)<\/p>\n<h3>3)\u00a0<em><b><u>Layers<\/u><\/b><\/em><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0It doesn&#8217;t matter what season it is, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rei.com\/learn\/expert-advice\/layering-basics.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i>layering<\/i><\/a> is extremely important. \u00a0Knowing the basic fundamentals of layering is essential, and must be considered for every part of your body. \u00a0Being soaked with sweat is always your enemy, and being too hot or too cold can be life-threatening. \u00a0The same basics apply to each body part.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The base layer should be thin, light, and moisture-wicking, followed by a thicker insulating layer such as wool, and topped by a wind-breaking\/water-repelling shell layer (choosing light colours for your outer layers can help you identify and remove dark-coloured <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdha.nshealth.ca\/public-health\/get-tickd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i>ticks<\/i><\/a>).\u00a0 Layering is important because it allows you to adjust to your changing body temperature and environmental conditions by dawning or shedding layers as you go.\u00a0 Be aware that your body temperature will rise drastically once you start moving.\u00a0 It&#8217;s wise to start with minimal layers and add them when you stop moving.\u00a0 Sweaty clothing is your enemy in cold weather especially.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Whatever the conditions when you start out, it&#8217;s no guarantee they will stay that way. \u00a0Dense forests can shield the wind, rain, and sun, so when you get to an open area you&#8217;re exposed to a massive change in conditions. \u00a0Coastal areas are also notorious for dramatic changes. \u00a0Temperatures can rise and fall one season&#8217;s worth at any given time.\u00a0 When you stop moving, a stiff breeze can make summer feel like winter.\u00a0 Hard, physical exertion can make winter feel like mid-summer heat.\u00a0 If you aren&#8217;t careful to adjust your layers accordingly, you can quickly encounter dangerous <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hypothermia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i>hypothermia<\/i><\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyperthermia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i>hyperthermia<\/i><\/a> situations.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"What to wear camping: layering basics || REI\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/W8AjrLz_I4o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>4) Focus On Your <em>Feet<\/em><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The most important part of your body in the outdoors is your feet. \u00a0Taking proper care of your feet should be your #1 priority. \u00a0If your feet hurt, you can&#8217;t move, and if you can&#8217;t move you&#8217;re in trouble. \u00a0Most important of all is having dry feet.\u00a0 Wearing a <i><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1OSiUQv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sock liner<\/a> <\/i>is a good way of keeping your feet dry and blister-free. \u00a0Make sure your footwear is comfortable and will not cause any blisters or other discomforts which can hobble you after a few hours of hiking.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0&#8220;Waterproof&#8221; and &#8220;breathable&#8221; are two keywords to look for with footwear or most types of equipment for hiking. Top things off with a set of <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3dAHav4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">gaiters<\/a>, and you can have lightweight protection for your shins while keeping twigs, insects, and moisture out of your boots.\u00a0 Foot warmth is really only a concern in winter.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1X1oqc7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wool socks<\/a> over your sock liner, combined with waterproof boots are usually enough to do the job. \u00a0During other seasons you don&#8217;t want to insulate too much.\u00a0 Sweat and wetness is more often a problem than warmth is.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How to Lace a Hiking Boot For Better Fit\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SOE28brAcEc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>5)\u00a0<b><u>Anticipate To <\/u><i><u>Hydrate<\/u><\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0You can survive weeks without food but only a couple of days or hours without water. \u00a0You should never overlook bringing water even on a short outing. \u00a0Water is always #1 on my packing list for any trip. \u00a0Many hiking backpacks now have dedicated space for a <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.halifaxtrails.ca\/product\/2l-hydration-bladder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hydration pack<\/a>, which is often the most convenient way of carrying water.\u00a0 On longer trips where bringing a heavy supply of cumbersome water jugs isn&#8217;t practical, consider water <i><a href=\"https:\/\/shop.halifaxtrails.ca\/product\/mini-water-filtration-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">filtration devices<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/gp\/product\/B00SK7AHA8\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=15121&amp;creative=390961&amp;creativeASIN=B00SK7AHA8&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=halitrai09-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">purifying tablets<\/a><\/i>, or good old-fashioned boiling to make use of available water sources. \u00a0You should also be attuned to recognize the <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.waterbenefitshealth.com\/dehydration-symptoms.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">symptoms of dehydration<\/a> <\/i>and not to let yourself reach even the earliest stages.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Must-Haves For Every Trip:<a href=\"https:\/\/shop.halifaxtrails.ca\/guide\/essential-outdoor-gear-for-hiking-biking-paddling-camping\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5340\" src=\"http:\/\/www.halifaxtrails.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/hiking-biking-camping-outdoor-gear.jpg\" alt=\"essential outdoor safety gear\" width=\"1080\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.halifaxtrails.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/hiking-biking-camping-outdoor-gear.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.halifaxtrails.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/hiking-biking-camping-outdoor-gear-300x50.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.halifaxtrails.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/hiking-biking-camping-outdoor-gear-768x128.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.halifaxtrails.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/hiking-biking-camping-outdoor-gear-50x8.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<p>You should always be equipped with basic safety gear on every outing.\u00a0 Regardless of whether you&#8217;re doing a quick hike on a familiar trail or a multi-day adventure, you should have <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.halifaxtrails.ca\/guide\/essential-outdoor-gear-for-hiking-biking-paddling-camping\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">these<\/a> basics packed.<\/p>\n<p>Always make sure to <strong>tell someone where you&#8217;re going<\/strong>.\u00a0 If no one knows you&#8217;re gone, or where, help will not be on the way.\u00a0 A broken ankle combined with a dead cellphone or no cell reception can turn into a life or death situation.\u00a0 It&#8217;s essential to make someone aware of your destination, intended route &amp;
