\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Best Apps For Nature Lovers, campers, hikers, photographers & outdoor enthusiasts.\u00a0 My top 5 favourite apps after spending plenty of time hiking, camping & exploring local nature areas.\u00a0 Apps come and go, but these 5 are staples in my digital kit.<\/p>\n

\"iNaturalist<\/a><\/h3>\n

iNaturalist<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0On everyone’s best apps for nature lovers list for good reason.\u00a0 This app is like packing a biologist in your pocket.\u00a0 If you’re always curious about the plants, insects and wildlife you see on your outdoor adventures, this app will be your new best friend.\u00a0\u00a0The app allows you to upload photos to auto-identify, or ask the large user-based community to help identify unsatisfactory results.\u00a0 The website is better than the app for in-depth community aspects like upvoting and discussions.\u00a0 \u00a0In tandem, the website and app are great tools to get “nature woke”.\u00a0 You can also allow your photos to be used as a public contribution to the library for each species.\u00a0 Just don’t expect it to be able to identify that new life form discovered<\/a> on the Bluff Trail<\/a> just yet.<\/p>\n

\"Geocaching<\/a>Geocaching<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a021st-century treasure hunting.\u00a0 Like Pokemon Go but much more tangible.\u00a0 A rewarding activity that’s part treasure hunting, part riddle solving.\u00a0 \u00a0Great for families.\u00a0 Keeps children’s attention and encourages teamwork.\u00a0 Walks in the woods may be interesting to adults, but having an activity like this makes it fun and appealing to people of all ages.\u00a0 A very popular activity worldwide, you can dive deep into the community or casually find a cache or two.\u00a0 You’ll be shocked at just how many of these little treasures are hidden everywhere.<\/p>\n

\"Geotracker<\/a>Geotracker<\/a> (Android) & Map My Hike<\/a> (iPhone)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0There are lots of hiking GPS apps out there, but Geotracker is the one I eventually settled on.\u00a0 It’s simple, reliable, and allows you to export maps in a file format that’s compatible with Google Maps and other navigation software.\u00a0 The apps allow\u00a0you to set markers complete with photos and descriptions on the fly.\u00a0 \u00a0It keeps key stats involving time (moving & total), distance and elevation.\u00a0 These stats are not only useful for post-hike analysis but also for mid-hike planning.\u00a0 \u00a0Stopping to check how long it took you to get to a certain point helps you plan how much further you want to go and still be able to safely return before sunset or before your legs cramp up.\u00a0 Map My Hike has very similar functionalities for iPhone.\u00a0 GPS recording apps drain your phone battery at a much faster rate than normal so be sure to carry a\u00a0battery bank<\/a> and\/or equip your phone with an extended battery case<\/a>.\u00a0 Just remember to stop recording before your ride home or it will record that also and ruin all of your stats.<\/p>\n

\"Sun<\/a>Sun Locator<\/a> (Android)\u00a0Sun Surveyor<\/a> (iPhone)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0These apps are great for photography<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0Either plan out your shot before you go, or anticipate them on the fly.\u00a0 Shows you where you’ll want to be for the\u00a0golden hour at sunset or blue hour at sunrise.\u00a0 Very useful to know exactly where the sun will be rising and setting at your precise location.\u00a0 Also shows you where the sun and shadows will be at any given time of the day.\u00a0 Use the map function or augmented reality camera function to see the charts overlayed on your current view.\u00a0 Free for basic versions with upgraded paid versions available.<\/p>\n

\"Google<\/a>Google Sky Map<\/a> (Android) SkyView<\/a> (iPhone)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Perhaps my favourite of all outdoor apps.\u00a0 If you’re at my level of astronomy knowledge, every cluster of stars looks like the big dipper.\u00a0 This app will set you straight quickly and easily.\u00a0 Hold it up to the sky and move it around for real-time feedback.\u00a0 Great for identifying stars, planets, constellations, and galaxies.\u00a0 It even shows you where meteor showers are located on any given evening, for your best chance to see some shooting stars.\u00a0 One of my favourite things to do is to find an interesting looking star, identify it with the app and do a YouTube or Google search to learn all kinds of interesting\/mindblowing things about it.\u00a0 This app is the perfect companion for camping and a great way to keep children engaged and curious.\u00a0 Google Sky Map – Free.\u00a0 Skyview – Free for basic.\u00a0 Upgradeable paid version.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Perhaps #1 on my best apps for nature lovers list, what it lacks in fun, it makes up in utility.\u00a0 Essentially a digital first-aid kit that everyone should have, especially people who spend time in the wilderness.\u00a0 Vital info at your fingertips, quickly and easily, without the need for a Wi-Fi or a data connection.\u00a0 It should always be readily accessible on your phone, just as your first aid kit should always be readily accessible in your backpack.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
