off-season.\u00a0 In Autumn it comes alive as the forested trails create a vibrant array of colour as diverse as the foliage.\u00a0 With <i class=\"wp-svg-eye eye\"><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/upMpSnCjv612\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">old-growth trees<\/a> mixed in, it&#8217;s an urban nature experience that amateur arborists will appreciate.\u00a0 The trail is mostly rugged and unmarked.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Reaching Sandy Lake you&#8217;ll be treated to bands of <i class=\"wp-svg-eye eye\"><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/j52PqrPA2Gq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">colour\u00a0surrounding its shores<\/a>.\u00a0 A great spot for a <i class=\"wp-svg-eye eye\"><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/3H6ZNGQBr1s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">picnic,<\/a> the beach area is an ideal place to spend some relaxation time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Next, you&#8217;ll head into the woods as the trail becomes more narrow and rugged.\u00a0 A quiet, shady environment full of squirrels preparing for the long winter to come.\u00a0 This stretch is under 1km and a gradual uphill slope.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0My favourite part about this hike is when you come out of the dense forest and onto the <i class=\"wp-svg-eye eye\"><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/V38YdNzG5Dr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">power line trail<\/a>.\u00a0 The moment you step out of the woods you&#8217;ll enter into a colourful vista fit for painting.\u00a0 This part of the trail can be quite wet and muddy so proper footwear is a must.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Turning 90\u00b0 off of the powerline trail onto a narrower version, you&#8217;ll walk a corridor of colour\u00a0as you head downhill back towards the park.\u00a0 Many birds inhabit this area, including Osprey who fish the lake.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0You&#8217;ll veer off the power line trail and head into the woods again for a short stretch before meeting up with the main road leading the <i class=\"wp-svg-eye eye\"><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kuula.co\/post\/7nVH2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">parking lot<\/a> which is a scenic area in itself.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><div class=\"loading-wrap\"><ul class=\"elastislide-list jfbalbum\" Map<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Part of Halifax&#8217;s long-promised #<a href=\"https:\/\/www.halifaxtrails.ca\/tag\/blue-mountain-birch-cove\/\">Blue Mountain-Birch Cove Lakes<\/a> Wilderness Park, this trail leads to the highest point of the Chebucto Peninsula.\u00a0 A proposal for an absurdly expensive, redundant highway through the heart of this trail, place it on the front-line of the battle for protection.\u00a0 What could become North America&#8217;s largest wilderness park includes this area in its planned boundaries.\u00a0 It would be great to see it created once and for all (see the Friends Of Blue Mountain-Birch Cove Lakes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/FriendsBMBCL\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook group<\/a> to stay current).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The trail runs through some recently clear-cut areas that are a stark contrast to the colourful views atop Blue Mountain.\u00a0 The province&#8217;s valuable forestry industry is an important economic driver that is occasionally at odds with the protection of wild spaces.\u00a0 Hopefully, this area gets the protection it deserves, while the industry functions sustainably in the rest of the province.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Starting from the end of the cul-de-sac on Anahid Drive you&#8217;ll head into the woods along a gravel logging road lined with wildflowers and colourful vegetation.\u00a0 The road skirts an uncommonly scenic clearcut that reveals the hilly terrain.\u00a0 The cut is at an early stage of re-growth, as it is reclaimed by wildflowers, shrubs and the next generation of trees.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Eventually, you&#8217;ll encounter the first fork in the road where you&#8217;ll turn to the right alongside the cut until you reach another fork.\u00a0 Heading to your right will take you on the full loop that involves more time, effort and obstacles than the more direct route by heading style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The full loop will lead you along the logging road and onto more clearcut land.\u00a0 The open nature of this area makes for some scenic vistas\u00a0 My first explorations led to wrong turns and unintentional side trips that ended up being rewarded by some great Fall scenery.\u00a0 Following the loop involves crossing a <i class=\"wp-svg-eye eye\"><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kuula.co\/post\/7dvRX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stream<\/a> that can be a raging river at times as well as muddy areas.\u00a0 The rugged clearcut section requires treading carefully.\u00a0 Perhaps the hardest part of this route is finding the spot to head into the woods and upward to the Blue Mountain lookoff.\u00a0 This wooded trail heads uphill at a fairly steep incline.\u00a0 Use plenty of caution navigating on this route.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Taking the previously mentioned direct route to the Blue Mountain lookoff leads into a densely wooded trail with streams and impromptu <i class=\"wp-svg-eye eye\"><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kuula.co\/post\/7dv23\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">footbridges<\/a>.\u00a0 The steady uphill climb involves a couple of deep knee-bending traverses.\u00a0 In the midst of this trail, you&#8217;ll encounter a <i class=\"wp-svg-eye eye\"><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kuula.co\/post\/7dv3H\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fork<\/a>\u00a0where it&#8217;s important to keep right.\u00a0 At this fork, there was a sign created by concerned citizens pointing out that this spot has been identified as a location for the proposed highway.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0As you approach the top of Blue Mountain you&#8217;ll encounter a large <i class=\"wp-svg-eye eye\"><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kuula.co\/post\/7dv3z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">boulder<\/a>\u00a0followed by a rock outcrop, complete with <i class=\"wp-svg-eye eye\"><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/jUFmMEf7hNu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener gem amidst a treasure.\u00a0 Reaching the elevated granite outcrop overlooking the lake is an exhilarating moment.\u00a0 The breathtaking view is even more impressive when the Autumn colours are in full swing.\u00a0 Framed by oranges, yellows and red&#8217;s, the view is like stepping directly into a painting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0This hike can either be a linear trail involving backtracking or a longer loop that skirts Ash and Hobsons Lake as well (see my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.halifaxtrails.ca\/hobsons-lake-hiking-trail\/\">Hobsons Lake<\/a> Trail page for info on that).\u00a0 The linear route described here is rugged and largely unmarked.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0You can begin from two different starting points.\u00a0 The main parking area by the Maskwa Aquatic club is the typical way to access this area, but a more direct route begins at the end of Colins Road.\u00a0 The Maskwa route ends up being about 2kms longer.\u00a0 \u00a0As with all the trails in this area, it&#8217;s important to pay attention to where you&#8217;re going as there are many paths that lead in various directions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Each route involves a steady incline with a few places where extra squats at the gym will pay off.\u00a0 The trails are packed with rock formations amongst the dense forest.\u00a0 The forest composition changes with the varying topography.\u00a0 From the\u00a0Colins Road\u00a0trail, you&#8217;ll reach <i class=\"wp-svg-eye eye\"><\/i>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/P5Z9cMh1FcC2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Coyote Bog<\/a>&#8221; where the only coyotes you&#8217;re likely to see are of the <a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/sqNCiY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wooden kind<\/a>.\u00a0 The bog is full of deep reds and bright yellows during this season.\u00a0 A large boulder overlooking the bog makes a great place to sit and take a break before continuing on.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The final approach to the Fox Lake lookoff involves some steep inclines and declines where you&#8217;ll want to be wearing sturdy footwear.\u00a0 The path can be hard to see when you enter rocky clearings but the correct path is unmistakable\u00a0when you&#8217;re on it.\u00a0 Stone steps and other helpful human-built improvements will keep you on track throughout.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0As previously described, the view from the elevated lookoff is the crescendo of this hike.\u00a0 \u00a0Be warned that this exposed location can be windy and colder than the rest of the hike.\u00a0 It&#8217;s always wise to the province&#8217;s few remaining salmon rivers.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the salmon in this river have been on a sharp decline in recent years.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll witness ongoing efforts to help restore the salmon habitat to its natural glory thanks to work by the <i class=\"wp-svg-info-2 info-2\"><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/sackvillerivers.ns.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sackville Rivers Association<\/a>.\u00a0 Scenic and well-built bridges, benches, picnic tables line the route.\u00a0 Informative and educational information panels explain the habitat and the efforts to restore it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0This active transportation trail is ideal for biking, jogging and walking.\u00a0 My favourite way to do the trail is by bicycle, starting from either the Superstore <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/KoE5LEzfJBJ2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">parking lot<\/a> or Bud Bremner Park.\u00a0 The park can be fairly busy at times as the sports fields are a hub for sporting events.\u00a0 Biking the trail involves back-tracking to your starting point once you reach the end.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The crusher dust lined trail crosses the river at various points and each spot is a great place to take in the autumn colours that line the river.\u00a0 A small <i class=\"wp-svg-eye eye\"><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/GTtiodMdxm32\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pedestrian walkway tunnel<\/a> by the Bedford Rifle Range that might otherwise be ugly, is one of the highlights of the trail thanks to some young artists.\u00a0 Beyond the tunnel, there are two especially <i class=\"wp-svg-eye eye\"><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/3GrmCYa9XzL2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">scenic bridges<\/a> which make the best stopping points to get great views of the colourful trees lining and reflecting off of the river.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The trail comes to somewhat of an abrupt end on the Old Sackville Road as plans for its expansion in the near future will extend it as far as funding and public support will allow.\u00a0 The Sackville Rivers Association has detailed plans for this expansion and has recently contributed to the opening of a 500m paved section for phase 1 of new construction.\u00a0 Leading from the Sackville Lions Club to the Little Sackville River, its a great start to what will become one of the city&#8217;s best biking routes.<\/p>\n<div Trail Map<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The Beechville, Lakeside, Timberlea Trail aka the B.L.T. is one of Halifax&#8217;s most popular converted &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.halifaxtrails.ca\/tag\/rails-to-trails\/\">rails-to-trails<\/a>&#8220;.\u00a0 Aptly named, it connects the 3 communities and continues as far as Lunenburg on a route known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.halifaxtrails.ca\/rum-runners-trail\/\">Rum Runner&#8217;s Trail<\/a>.\u00a0 The entire trail is lined with a cornucopia of Autumn colour, making this ride feel like Mario Kart&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.ca\/search?q=mario+kart+rainbow+road&amp;hl=en-CA&amp;source=lnms&amp;tbm=isch&amp;sa=X&amp;sqi=2&amp;ved=0ahUKEwig26CUzNzdAhWTiqYKHUFjAGcQ_AUIDigB&amp;biw=1163&amp;bih=525&amp;dpr=1.65\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rainbow Road<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The trail starts from its dedicated parking lot next to an old Coca-Cola plant in an industrial park and ends in scenic Saint Margaret&#8217;s Bay (where it continues as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.halifaxtrails.ca\/saint-margarets-bay-trail\/\">Saint Margaret&#8217;s Bay Trail<\/a>).\u00a0 Comprised of 5 named sections, the total length of the trail is 13km.\u00a0 Unless you have vehicles at the starting and ending point, you&#8217;ll have to backtrack, doubling the total time and distance listed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The first section, known as &#8220;Blue Jay Way&#8221; follows alongside Governor Lake, with numerous stopping points with <i class=\"wp-svg-eye eye\"><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/kuula.co\/post\/7nV8v\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">benches<\/a> to sit along the shore.\u00a0 The next section known as &#8220;Six Mile Falls&#8221; is named for the small but scenic <i class=\"wp-svg-eye eye\"><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/kuula.co\/post\/7nVFn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">waterfall<\/a> which is one of the best stopping points of the trail.\u00a0 A <i class=\"wp-svg-eye eye\"><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kuula.co\/post\/7d99F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bridge<\/a>, that spans a river a short distance beyond the waterfall is another such stopping point.\u00a0 Especially scenic in the Fall, the river is a great place for some photos.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0&#8220;Fraser Mill Walk&#8221;
