{"id":11,"date":"2015-07-24T16:39:00","date_gmt":"2015-07-24T16:39:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2026-01-20T15:37:54","modified_gmt":"2026-01-20T19:37:54","slug":"outdoor-recreation-is-blooming-in-clayton-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.halifaxtrails.ca\/blog\/outdoor-recreation-is-blooming-in-clayton-park\/","title":{"rendered":"Outdoor Recreation Is Blooming In Clayton Park"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<script>\n  (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({\n    google_ad_client: \"ca-pub-0197062593890334\",\n    enable_page_level_ads: true\n  });\n<\/script><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<h3 style=\"background-color: white; color: #606060 !important; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px; letter-spacing: -0.5px; line-height: 22.5px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: center;\">Dog parks, walking trails, sports fields, and active transport.<\/h3>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.87199993133545; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; padding: 0px;\"><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-family: 'arial'; font-size: 13.3333333333333px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">The Halifax <a style=\"color: #6dc6dd; word-wrap: break-word;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.halifaxtrails.ca\/halifax-mainland-common-park\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mainland Common<\/a>, located in Clayton Park,<\/span><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-family: 'arial'; font-size: 13.3333333333333px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\"> has been recently upgraded. \u00a0Back in January, the city moved to replace <\/span><strong style=\"background-color: transparent; font-family: arial; font-size: 13.3333333333333px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">off-leash dog facilities<\/strong><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-family: 'arial'; font-size: 13.3333333333333px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\"> from Africville Park to a different location. \u00a0After consultations with a very engaged public, the Halifax Mainland Common was chosen as the site for the new facility. \u00a0Off-Leash parks are a rarity in Halifax so it was a gap that needed to be filled. \u00a0Not only does this site fill that gap, it has now become the centerpiece of an area blooming with recreation options. \u00a0From the design of the entry gates, to the fresh water dispensers the dog park gets an &#8220;A&#8221; grade in just about every aspect. \u00a0Separate fields for large and small dogs, a wooded trail section, a sheltered area, bag dispensers, garbage cans and a large parking area are reflections of a well executed plan. \u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.87199993133545; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; padding: 0px;\"><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-family: 'arial'; font-size: 13.3333333333333px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">The dog park is only the newest addition to the Mainland Common. \u00a0The <\/span><strong style=\"background-color: transparent; font-family: arial; font-size: 13.3333333333333px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">walking trails <\/strong><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-family: 'arial'; font-size: 13.3333333333333px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">have been around for years, and have been constantly improved upon, thanks to the <a style=\"color: #6dc6dd; word-wrap: break-word;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.halifaxnorthwesttrails.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Halifax Northwest Trails Association<\/a>. \u00a0They have spearheaded efforts to add interpretive signage, as well as improving and maintaining the trail with boardwalks, foot bridges. \u00a0The main loop is now lined with soft mulch, making it as aesthetically pleasing as it is soft on the feet. A boardwalk and <a style=\"color: #6dc6dd; word-wrap: break-word;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/views\/u\/0\/b\/102529665335971568159\/view\/102529665335971568159\/gphoto\/6172184831616575522?gl=ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">look-off<\/a> in the unique bog habitat provides a great area to spot many different types of plants, wild flowers, insects and birds. Chock full of pitcher plants and huckleberry bushes, there are plenty of plants and birds which are rarely seen in an urban setting. <em>Recommended:<\/em> \u00a0&#8220;<a style=\"color: #6dc6dd; word-wrap: break-word;\" href=\"https:\/\/shop.halifaxtrails.ca\/product\/trees-and-shrubs-of-the-maritimes-field-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trees and Shrubs of the Maritimes<\/a>&#8220;, &#8220;<a style=\"color: #6dc6dd; word-wrap: break-word;\" href=\"https:\/\/shop.halifaxtrails.ca\/product\/formac-field-guide-to-nova-scotia-birds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Birds of Nova Scotia<\/a>&#8221; and reading the interpretive signs along the way.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Halifax Mainland Common Park\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PJkCHuo6j0E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; padding: 0px;\"><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-family: 'arial'; font-size: 13.3333333333333px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">Activities don&#8217;t stop with nature walking. \u00a0There is a very well maintained, dirt infield, public baseball field as well as the <\/span><a style=\"color: #6dc6dd; text-decoration: none; word-wrap: break-word;\" href=\"https:\/\/soccerns.ca\/bmo-soccer-centre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u style=\"background-color: transparent; color: #1155cc; font-family: arial; font-size: 13.3333333333333px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">BMO Soccer Centre<\/u><\/a><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-family: 'arial'; font-size: 13.3333333333333px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\"> and <\/span><a style=\"color: #6dc6dd; text-decoration: none; word-wrap: break-word;\" href=\"http:\/\/canadagamescentre.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u style=\"background-color: transparent; color: #1155cc; font-family: arial; font-size: 13.3333333333333px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">Canada Games Centre<\/u><\/a><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-family: 'arial'; font-size: 13.3333333333333px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">.
