{"id":1009,"date":"2017-10-23T18:37:31","date_gmt":"2017-10-23T18:37:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.halifaxtrails.ca\/blog\/?p=1009"},"modified":"2020-01-27T05:30:12","modified_gmt":"2020-01-27T09:30:12","slug":"colpitt-lake-keith","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.halifaxtrails.ca\/blog\/colpitt-lake-keith\/","title":{"rendered":"Colpitt Lake Keith &#8211; Halifax Tree People"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span lang=\"en-CA\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Located at the West end of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.halifaxtrails.ca\/shaw-wilderness-park\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span lang=\"en-CA\">Colpitt Lake<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-CA\">\u00a0in the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.halifaxtrails.ca\/purcells-cove-backlands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span lang=\"en-CA\">Backlands<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-CA\">, Keith spends his days watching\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nature.ca\/notebooks\/english\/osprey.htm\"><span lang=\"en-CA\">O<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/nature.ca\/notebooks\/english\/osprey.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span lang=\"en-CA\">sprey<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-CA\"> and more than 40 species of migratory birds who visit this area exclusively.\u00a0\u00a0 Some of Keith\u2019s oldest <i class=\"wp-svg-eye eye\"><\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/ztWYg1KW3fN3KxXn9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ancestors<\/a> live on the Northeast side of the lake and may well be over a century old.\u00a0 This is no small feat when living in an area that sees regular wildfires, but Keith\u2019s brethren are well adapted to this\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrcan.gc.ca\/forests\/fire-insects-disturbances\/fire\/13149\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span lang=\"en-CA\">fire ecology<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-CA\">.\u00a0 Many different uniquely adapted plants such as the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nswildflora.ca\/species\/Ericaceae\/CorConradii\/species.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span lang=\"en-CA\">Broom Crowberry<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-CA\"> abound in this pine barren landscape. Surrounded by massive <i class=\"wp-svg-eye eye\"><\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/7LTCCa1dbS52\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">granite boulders<\/a>, Keith bears witness to remnants of a 200 million-year-old supercontinent known as <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.livescience.com\/37285-gondwana.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span lang=\"en-CA\">Gondwana<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-CA\">. The largest fragment of Gondwana exists from here through Nova Scotia\u2019s south shore, known as\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Meguma_terrane\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span lang=\"en-CA\">Meguma<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-CA\">.
