Charlie – Halifax Tree People

Map    Trail Guide   Photos

Charlie stands on the Northern shore of his lake, facing East because he loves watching the sunrise from the end of the lake. He wakes up early to watch the Blue Mountain-Birch Cove Lakes Wilderness Area come alive, with over 150 species of birds such as loonsosprey, and one of the largest woodpeckers in North America; the Pileated Woodpecker.  These woodpeckers regularly inspect him and his peers for ants.  In-turn he and other age-advanced trees provide ideal housing for their feathered friends.

Charlie watches with a smile as humans enjoy the view above him on the steep rocky look-off.  He encourages people to take a moment to sit in the custom built recliner made from the earth’s only above-water remnants of a 500 million-year-old seabed.  The landscape keeps a smile on his face, especially with dramatic changes colour from season-to-season due to the variety of trees and plant life, including a rare arctic-alpine plant known as the Mountain Sandwort.  Charlie is known as an unbiased referee for games of shinny, but lacks qualifications as a lifeguard and a skating instructor.
